Volterra – three

Just wandering around without a real destination was so much enjoyable there…..starting from the view from our room balconies…

….to narrow streets enclosed by brick walls…..

From high and small arches………

….to cozy and enchanted corners

Daring to go behind doors and hidden courtyard to explore….

…just to be stopped by the law…this below is the Medici Fortress, constructed at the command of the Duke of Athens who had been appointed governor of Florence in 1342 and upgraded by another Florentine ruler, Lorenzo the magnificent who was also responsible for the construction of the adjacent newer fortress in 1475.

Too bad the fortress is used currently as a maximum security prison…I had to stop there…
